Anybody Can Dance(ABCD), Can Anybody Teach?

ABCD = anybody can dance. Can anybody teach?
Schools have teachers’ certifications and qualifications. Doctors have certifications and qualifications. Sports and Nutrition where extensive work out happens and the personal training/work out classes happen; they require certifications and qualifications. Dance teachers too has that – did you know? Something called background and trainings. Specialty is taken in each field.

Dance is an ART So What! Aren’t you sweating out physically? Aren’t you moving around using your body parts? Won’t you burn calories? Won’t you get hurt if you do it wrong. How subtle can you do that it is not even recognizable to define it.

Genre of Dance: Does not matter. Be it Bharatanatyam, Bollywood/Tollywood, Indian Folk Dances, Fusion Dances. It just does not matter.

Why you will need enough knowledge of dance, body, everything to go together? So that you do not harm yourself while doing it, teaching it and your students can follow through same all their life. This is irrespective of other activities they do! Balance is mastered in your routine life. You pay for the knowledge and NOT for the in-born half talent or gifted talent that is not structured or disciplined. A gifted talent needs right guidance & training to sharpen it and follow through consistently. This is why, all families in performing arts will ALWAYS have separate teachers for their kids or their parents will plan lessons as a class routine and train them depending on their priorities of learning to set a discipline depending on size of their institution. In-spite of generations in performing arts for our own artistic director, Hetal Nagaraj, she too had to do her formal trainings. From her mainstream education school/colleges itself to her own mother (fully trained and student of fine arts) and her professional/formal dance teachers & institutes. Just like everybody, Hetal also has an excellent mainstream education that allows her to capitalize her talents and make her entire business, a self-reliant machine without serving any organization. For dance, it is infused with culture and dance techniques as per form or style as & when applicable. About Her : Read HereRight techniques at right time in the dances gives beautiful results. Thus, Results are faster and finer for any genre you do without compromising the dance form. Craftsmanship without right knowledge does not lead anywhere. An unknown/unattended talent or a gift is like a diamond in the mine that is still unearthed and will eventually die with human’s lifeline. If only humans were rock, it would be wonderful because then rocks/diamonds can be unearthed anytime in million years.

war scene of chakravyuh. For those who do not know, art forms such as kshatriya, kallari, chau and such others are into category of martial arts, defense mechanism and war strategies.

Knowledge is power when enough time is spent in gaining it. No book or video will ever teach you any talent that has practical methods for teaching it. It is learned during process of training. No shortcuts. If only you could eat all your life’s food in one go and be done with it all your life.

An example of half-knowledge that causes harm is from history itself: Case of Abhimanyu in Mahabharata. Example is taken from an art form as well to understand it better. For those who do not know, here’s the story: He gained his knowledge on a war strategy with his psychic abilities as per plan of lord Krishna when he was inside the womb of his mother when conversation about “Chakarvyuh” war strategy started. The conversation included how to enter, form, fight and also keep winning until “you don’t die” except how to get out of it “alive”. That is where the conversation was stopped cunningly by Lord Krishna. Throughout his life Abhimanyu took all the trainings that made him a successful warrior but in-spite of reminders, he did not take full knowledge of chakravyuh-the war strategy. In the end, he lost his life to it in actual battlefield only because he did not know how to exit/get out of the formation alive. Picture is posted above for understanding. Ultimately, Dronacharya was the only one who came out alive. Here is the answer why FULL knowledge is required. Even if you debate on this story to be true or say we made a human err, it still has a lesson to learn that you should learn to master everything that you intend to learn instead of doing it half-way and most important of all, do it from the right sources.

It is a whole different story whether or not you want to capitalize on your talents later in life. If you go to right place, at-least you will save your own body to do other things !!

Examples of Fusion Dances where several dances techniques from several dance forms are showed in just one dance on a music that is composed likewise. ALL dancers in this picture of fusion dances are trained in Bollywood or Folk or Bharatanatyam. Types of dances that you learn in dance academy/school: Dances that you learn in dance classes are the dances that you cannot learn by watching or few drop-in classes. While most people can dance easily, it all boils down to techniques after that level. Festival dances are best example for which you do not need a huge training list but after some basic level, it requires training so that you do not harm your body. Even the festival dances come with techniques depending on genre. These may be the dances that do not fall in any category per se to define them depending on culture or festival. Some may not be even a style to call it Free Style. It is thus an open category of dance without form or style to it and often recognized as street dance that exhibits regional culture and still NOT folk. Some street dances that emerge from festivals may or may not be called as festival dances as they may or may not have anything related to festival. It will depend on what is done in there. Party dances may or may not show any culture/tradition and are irrespective of any forms or style attached to it.

Creative dances are not bind to one form or style and thus it is called creative dances; these exhibit mostly interpretation of words in the songs used or some concept. Fusion comes in picture only after 2 dance forms or styles are infused.

Pls do not forget, we are talking about dance that can be defined even if music is not played.

Where Bollywood dances had categories, Fusion had so, Bharatanatyam was defined and so was folk!

Festival Folk was showed and was compared with street dances that looked like folk, creative dances were categorized as well depending on which form it took its movements from!

Bottom line, if you happen to see that your child has an inborn talent or gift or it’s a family thing to stay in the circle of performing arts or your child is coachable then it is best interest of child and parent to groom the talent with all the required fundamentals and all the formal trainings from the right sources. Pilot it to the right direction and that’s when you get results.

And we are right here to teach you to do it right, all your life! To love doing it, do it fully and from all the right sources. Do it consistently to master it. One life you have; million years not so sure but let’s give you 100 years, one body-not rock 😉

Know The Dancer By Dance Name

Would You Know The Dancer By Dance Name ?? And yes, comes the answer from all our students and every dancer that we have ever known.

Bharatanatyam students who have completed their exclusive trainings by all means want to take that crown of being fully trained and be called as Bharatanatyam Dancer once they reach to performing dance level. What do these names tell you : Smt. Rama Vaidyanathan, Smt. Mrinalini Sarabhai, Smt. Mallika Sarabhai, Smt. Hemamalini :), Rukmani Devi Arundale.

Students of Indian Folk Dances have always made sure to exclude themselves from Bollywood Dancers or Classical Dancers and take that ethnic crowd. Folk Dances are nothing but dance forms just not that long or lengthy as Indian Classical Forms. And so does these name : Smt. Mallika Sarabhai,  Shobhana, Smt. Hemamalini, many more…

And yes, we have Bollywood Students who proudly takes the pride of being called as Bollywood dancer as they showcase some of their favorite actors to unlimited creativity that they learn at Mirchi Dance Academy. Check these names that identify as Bollywood dancers or choreographers : Smt. Hemamalini, Madhuri Dixit, Prabhu Deva, Hritik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, and many more.

And yet, all of the above people know exactly what they are doing! We are very sure that there will be more that we may not have mentioned and have established themselves as dancers. What do the names tell you though 🙂

Some dancers that dance between dance categories like Madhuri Dixit, Hemamalini, Mallika Sarabhai are still identified with their skill-set and showcase them well when done as actual dance form piece. While creative dancing is at its hype these days (not fusion), these dancers have carved differences between each of the dances that they perform. You see fundamentals in their dances, and so comes along flawless execution that comes with years of training. We all have seen them aging, staying young, growing big and small by waist in sizes :), small to long hair, becoming tan to becoming most fair of all and yet they do can do it right.

Why ? Training :). It trains your body to be able to handle that work no matter what you go through and it mentally prepares you to just do it. Your reflex by default goes to muscle memory when being said to do so and that does not happen in days. Not even in 10 days even if you dance from 9am to 9 pm for straight 10 days. First 5 days, you will be pretty much just learning the basics if so! To master dance forms, you will need to master those movements and with those, the techniques. To build that, you have to do it for over 100 hours minimum.  Life is very simple and so is dance. Even if we dance across all we have ever learned, you can outline each of dance technique, identify it and name it. And once done, next comes the dancer :).

A lot of students at Grace And Grooves dance between categories depending on commitment especially our Folk Dance Students and Bollywood Students and they all are able to outline, differentiate and flawless show what they are they are doing, with names :). They can outline creative dances as well when its done.

At Grace And Grooves, Bollywood/Movie Dance program students enjoy the liberty to attend any class they want, it is not everybody’s cup of tea to handle the dances or the technique classes of dance form. This idea was inspired from Hetal Nagaraj’s own teacher in Ahmedabad who has been following this ever since they started teaching Bollywood(past couple of years).

Now that is power of training that you would want to pay for. And this is why you do not want teachers who tell you to watch and learn. Remember one thing that everything that is online and requires physical work with techniques is for those know what it is.

One body and one life we all have and yes, we aim to do right. Our life is that precious and we want you to value your life :).

Some of Our Bollywood List of Songs (Indian Cinema/Movie Dances).

2013 and onwards, Grace And Grooves started teaching Bollywood/Tollywood-Indian Movie Dance Lessons with structured programs. Songs such as Bahubali, Jai Ganesh, Krishna Leela, Heer, Tamma Tamma(Remix) and many more were acknowledged and requested by clients and organizers to perform in community/cultural events and auditions/competitions over and over again. Some of the listed songs that we performed were non-movie songs remixes such as Come and Get it by Selena Gomez, Cheap-Thrills combined with indian songs etc. T’was fun teaching them.

Personal achievements of choreographers with their other dance activities ARE NOT listed. You can check those out in our other blog post! Multiple Entry of same song means it was performed multiple times but with entirely new choreography with absolutely no relevance with previous one. All dancers in non-indian dance forms or styles are fully trained dancers at competitive levels.

Journey of Master In Fine Arts….Submitted By Hetal Nagaraj.

August 2016 : We were excited to hear the news that Hetal Nagaraj got accepted for Masters Program at TDES via Tamil University in August 2016. College:  Kalai Kaveri College of Fine Arts, Trichy, India.

A label & ID of OKC213160083A was given to her as Hetal Mahesh Joshi. She would mock to her students that she got her roll-number/student id too and that she is student too. Some of her students started calling her Hetal since then :).

This makes us laugh for 2 reasons. First reason is, a very non-traditional picture-LOL. 2. Our owner was a student, not long ago 😛

Her inspiration of having a master degree in fine arts comes directly from one of her own cousin’s spouse/bhabhi (sister in law & aunt-2way relation:) who was enrolled in Masters Program @Darpana Academy, Ahmedabad India. Her Bhabhi had to leave her degree half-way for personal reasons and since then, Hetal Nagaraj had her mind set on doing Masters in either bharatnatyam, or theater with full dance work, at some point of time.

Finding a university or dance program that not only offers robust MASTERS program of Bharatnatyam but also offers in-depth knowledge of Natya Shashtra, History, Styles, Theaters and Musicals with the flexibility of long distance program was a challenge. Hetal Nagaraj got accepted in 2 universities for this program with her dance experience, video clips of main margam, creative bharatnatyam dances, direct referral letters from her past dance teachers and her existing Master Degrees in other education stream that she already had. Rest all the universities had a requirement to do a full 2 year resident program and stay local for full two years with classes non-stop through the week and weekend! Masters of Bharatnatyam

Master Of Fine Arts Year1

Biggest Challenge for Hetal Nagaraj was that she can’t just leave a young family and pursue dreams while running a full fledge A+ rating dance business with multiple locations, competitive performance schedules (almost every other month) in Bharatnatyam, Indian Folk Dances, Bollywood, Workshops, Elite performing team and all of that with her students taking part in competitions. Once you are married happily ever-after & have family, it is a package for whole family to achieve something as big as degree especially if parents are taking them; irrespective of whether or not you are in dance business! Whole family goes hand in hand to actually make it happen. Entire month of kids activities, planning meals for whole family, routines with home works, car-pooling, classes shuffled between choreographers as applicable in her absence, volunteer parents, website maintenance and it was STAAR Exam time for kids as well.

Bharatnatyam, Bharatanatyam

Break Time between classes…..all these are her classmates and they have dance businesses of their own in and out of India. Some in USA as well.

TDES via Tamil University gave her the options to not only be competitive at learning edge but flexibility to travel to Chennai for at-least one out of two degree years to give on-campus bharatnatyam theory exams, assignments, thesis/research,  presentations, do practical exams, live concert, musical and folk dance drama to be showcased before the teachers for grading.

All these dances were with full makeup and relevant costumes and costume change as required. Further, she decided to choose her degree location at Don Bosco College of Arts And Science, Chennai, India as her on-campus exam training (1 month required in person or average of 20-days) and examinations (practical and theory, in person). She decided Chennai as her location considering that Tamil History was one of the main subject and so she wanted to stay around Chennai to complete her research subject from locally available sources such as libraries, bookstores and visits to local dance schools. Don Bosco College of Arts And Science was her pick from the list due to her past upbringing of Convent Schools in Gandhinagar(India) and then affiliated programs at Ahmedabad(India) due to its discipline, environment, experiences and education standards.

At first the initial plan was to go in second year. Plans changed when the syllabus arrived in Fedex from university with a whopping 22 dance items to take care of, showcase them, write 1 research paper each year, minimum of 2 assignments per year, minimum of 1 presentation per year, LIVE concert, nattuvangam, talam, ragam and Tamil History with all terms in Tamil. It was her husband Nagaraj who insisted that with this type of syllabus, she should take this as an opportunity and must go personally both the years, just like any student would do for each year in any other Masters Program.

The dance items and other master level dances required hours of practices and a mentor/guide to correct/remind as required because of complexity in choreography. They were in speed 2, 3 and 4 at a cutting edge but not a sweet cherry on the top, most in 3 and 4!

It isn’t for a regular bharatnatyam dancer who is barely trained and could still handle that type of work with that intense choreography.  Complexity with speed 3 and 4 was tough nut after a long time for Hetal Nagaraj.

She learned latest concepts in Bharatanatyam which she had never learned or were not taught in North India probably because back then these were taught @post-arangetram level only. Most of these concepts were added to standard margam by Kalakshetra Foundation founded by Rukmani Devi, Chennai and by renowned Bharatanatyam Artists in multiple styles.

Thus the degree curriculum included Main Margam Items, Non-Margam Items as well as Additional Creative Choreography from renowned artist of  Mysore Bani, Pandanallur Bani, Thanjavur Bani and Kalakshetra Bani margam as a compulsory LIVE concert-all of this with grading. While Vazhuvur Bani was one of the sub-topic for Mrs. Hetal Nagaraj as part of her research/dissertation. She took several skype/watsapp video classes from her guide Dr. Marie Stella who taught and corrected her for the possibilities in margam bharatnatyam dances with nattuvangam.

Mrs.Hetal Joshi Nagaraj also took in-person classes with Dr. Marie Stella at Pondicherry where Dr. Marie Stella runs her own Dance Institute Kalai Aalayam Fine Arts Academy. Their group performed various items of margams, folk and solo bharatnatyam master works.

Her journey to full month stay at training and exam center for both the years were absolutely amazing! She stepped into this whole new world of Bharatnatyam with the infinite possibilities and complexities in southern India.

From what she thought would be questionable to do in various margam dances was NOW possible in unlimited combinations further. This experience opened a whole new creativity level in musicals, dance themes, concepts, usage of jatis and adavus in various permutations and combinations.

She implemented those concepts and was able to successfully use them not only in Bharatnatyam but in Indian Folk Dances and Bollywood/Tollywood/Indian Movie Dances of Grace And Grooves LLC giving exceptionally beautiful results with least amount of effort even for Bharatnatyam.

It took her 2 full years (2016 to 2018) for her to complete her degree in Masters In Fine Arts with whole family involved. This includes all our lovely students’ parents  of our private classes who walked with her in her journey very beautifully as she had to meet her deadlines of submissions or had her parallel skype classes.

With the type of knowledge that she gained in practical classes (skype/video watsapp/in person @Pondicherry) with her guide Dr. Marie Stella and during monthly in-house trainings, she thanks god that it did not happen in a click of button.

It would be too much for human brain to absorb all that, if it were to happen! She thanks her Tamil friends’ grand-parents (who were bharatnatyam dancers themselves) who helped her with very old tamil dialects for her theory papers that required compulsory usage of these words for grading. A lot of her regional tamil friends from chennai as well found it difficult to explain or understand these terms. All of that happened for Hetal Nagaraj for both the years back to back, one year at a time with proper planning.

Don’t even wish for a degree in 1 day with a click of a button. It is not going to help you! It is the training from all the right people that will never fail you and that you will not experiment on students because you have studied each scenario with pros and cons & thus it is available for you to use in your own creative way, very very safely!

Just that common sense is something that no university will ever teach you and to master that you will have to let go your ego ;). This is irrespective of your age!

Planning

80 Seperate School Lunches(2 kids), 40 dinners combined for 4 people, 40 lunches for huby/mil(combined 2 ppl), 25 breakfast(2 ppl), and extra 10 dishes here and there. There are similar bento boxes behind the line you see in the picture. 2017 too, similar preps and this year pretty much same plan but with MIL present, it was easier.

We strongly recommend all bharatnatyam dancers who are interested to go for this course provided you have the following :

  1. Zeal, patience, energy, money (investment in INR), and proper planning to do so.
  2. You should have done bharatnatyam up-to varnam level and above at some point in your life to be able to handle this type of work. Arangetram is irrelevant.
    • Style of bharatnatyam will not matter for this particular degree because their program itself includes multiple styles.
    • You must submit videos of any of these with other degrees that you have to become eligible for this program.
    • Private classes with your guide will be required to get your smoothly through this journey with deadlines, protocols to be followed and your guide will help you with the following as well :
      • if you have learned your bharatnatyam in non-traditional or conventional ways or you had several breaks through out your learning, or nattavangams, ragam, talam were not part of your training then you will have to educate yourself with these.
      • Nattuvangam, Recitation of Jatis and Adavus are graded.
      • In-person practicals, concerts participation is required. Must be ready to showcase all of above or as asked with full costume, makeup, hair-do; irrespective of any help available. Makeup artist may/may not be available.
  3. Expect morning 9am to 5pm dance routines and as you get closer to exams it will be 9am to 11pm practice hours. If you have any physical disability, come with doctor’s note or do not apply!
  4. List/selections of locations, accommodation to be take care by you while these will be required during your on campus trainings and all exams.
    • Paid meals 3 times a day at the campus canteen and everything is available around the area.
  5. Most important-you should be ready to go for a month (average of 20 days approx and add 2 more days to get the feel of area and shopping for your concert). Attendance is strictly required during all the days for the on-campus classes and exams. Best if you go both years. It will be worth a trip….
  6. Cons : Make sure you stay at the top of conversation with these people and get it all in writing, we had students who were marked absent even when they were present, we had students whose names and marks were printed wrong and lot of such issues.. Hetal managed to get out clean because she is from security background and so she has habit of keeping track of everything. Our owner is on the top of everything and that is how she is able to make a positive and inspiring difference in her students’ life.

Why Grace And Grooves LLC discontinued Better Business Bureau of Dallas Fortworth : 

Loved, loved and loved the services and perks that we received from BBB, A Better Business Bureau. Past 2 years has been an amazing ride with them with all the wonderful services, workshops and knowledge that they offer for small businesses like Grace And Grooves LLC.

It is when you suddenly realize that you are the only Indian Company offering exclusive indian folk dance classes apart from bollywood and not mix it up anywhere around, and that you are the only one with absolutely transparent background in all the programs that you offer from Bharatnatyam and Bollywood as well, it is a feature on our hats to be connected with BBB, A better Business Bureau.

The only problem that we faced was as we moved further in journey with them, we asked our parents and staff members to write something about how they feel about us on our little place that we earned it from Better Business Bureau as we were with A+ accreditation with them.

It seems like social media such as google, waze, facebook, twitter and instagram took over all of this when it came to customer feeling more at comfort talking about it. Our customers share such a fun and healthy relationship with us that it was better and easier for them to just write reviews over social medias instead of BBB boards.

From ethical grounds, quality of work, affordable services, beautiful costumes, non-allergic jewelry, arangetram preps, continued education in classical dances for various degrees and providing services as promised in the related programs, everything just ended up in social medias, recommendations, emails and text/sms messages.

And thus, we had to let go the better business bureau accreditation at-least until we get students/parents/customers who would not mind spending some time logging to these BBB boards to see our exclusive little place on their website and write something about us-good or bad!

That being said, we still enjoy attending their programs as we come across and available. We miss that tiny little icon of better business bureau and we hope that in near future, we can do something more with them and use them further for our services and products.

Is Learning Language Required To Learn Dances ?

A question that has puzzled several students for years and will probably puzzle coming generations too!

Debate is if its required ? or if its not required ?

We say – IT IS NOT REQUIRED.

Coming from a background of Indian Performing Arts and first dance steps learned in Indian Folk Dances and then Bharatnatyam, language is just a part of song that expresses the mood and the story of incidents happening in the act/song.

Pure Bharatnatyam in Pure Gujarati

With several Indian Folk Dances being taught one after the other with their styles, it is IMPOSSIBLE to sit and learn all the languages since one of the main criteria to differentiate most or all Indian Folk Dances would be the language itself to begin with and then techniques; later the choreography.

But does that mean that dancing anything you like or directly expressing the words of song on one particular language is called Indian Folk Dance-NOPE :).

We wished, it was that easy.

Translations of each Indian Folk Dance are very much given in all pioneer institutes that teach these authentic Indian Folk Dances (not to confuse with Bollywood/Indian Movie Music or dance moves). At Grace And Grooves, students get to understand the translations in their native language (most preferably english in USA) just like the way our teachers and guru(s) gave these in our regional languages. With practice and proper understanding of each mood and lyrics, each dance is thus easier to incorporate in dances & students. It brings out the moods, expressions & lyrics of the song as & when required. Our audiences are able to understand what song means with the dance being a medium 🙂 This includes Bharatnatyam. That Is How We Got Our Name 🙂 

Not to confuse with happy-smiling face all the time (That is not following Navarasa given the fact that Indian Folk Dance May Not Follow Natya Shashtra!) Read below why…Navarasa does not tell you to smile all the time!

editedrec5For those who understand language during the performances, it will NOT look beautiful because your face, gestures and mood is telling a wrong story than what song says. It will look awkward and weird. Not Beautiful. Nobody cares for those who don’t understand language and would wonder what it is!

Is this is evolution of dance ? Nope. Neither it is accepting modernization. It is not creativity & it does not showcase any culture either! It is not fusion either. But is that a solution for those who don’t understand language? NOPE.

Remove the word-Indian from it, Remove the word-Folk from it in that case :). You can remove the word-dance from it if you know language(LOL). Because yeah, by all means you can move your body the way you want on any music you want. No rules without any restriction is just creative movements. And we wonder what is so creative, if you are showing exactly what song describes and it does not relate to the song..We could add salt to our tea/coffees…let’s assume, nobody would care to notice!

Bharatnatyam is no different when it comes to breaking chains of language. Techniques have no connections with languages and we wished it was true for all Indian Folk Dances.

Bollywood Program Content 4Although most krithis and keertanas were composed in Tamil for Bharatnatyam with its birth & re-birth in Tamilnadu, the art-form has travelled through out India & outside, gaining popularity in North India. Though if you see the jatis & adavu sets do not have any language except pure Carnatic/Classical notes (no song associated with it). Several other compositions from other renowned regional poets were added to the list of dances esp. for Abhinaya as it travelled across the states. Some of which includes inspirations from Indian Folk Dance poets too where the entire song/lyrics were RECOMPOSED to Classical/Carnatic form with ragam and talam to welcome the art-form. But dance remained same! To make it competitive, some institutes added more margams, permutations and combinations of jatis & adavu sets to its choreography. Terminology w/pronunciations, teaching methods changes depending on teacher.

Why this evolution ?

Because teaching Tamil was not possible for everybody as they travelled to different states and taught the dance form. Sitting and learning Tamil was NOT possible for each student when dance was just an activity to incorporate traditional classical culture in life. So translations were given word by word with meaning and the story or act of each composition.

Then…………..Why so much emphasis on learning language then ??

Our choreography works from past trainings in multiple languages showcasing differences between Indian Folk Dances, Dance Dramas and Bollywood/Movie Dances.

Learning a new language has not hurt anybody so a-lot of students have learned the language to make it easier to incorporate other compositions that were not taught by their teachers directly gave more possibilities to achieve in the art-form. It is beautiful practice to train your mind to learn new language anyways and there is nothing wrong if you learn it or if you don’t. For some students who have taken their degrees in Sanskrit and any of such rich mother languages, all languages pretty much connects to them. Roots of most languages have been same with no evolution theories to it.

Indian Folk Dances though travelled did not leave their regional language in most cases. Though the variations and styles were created within a specific Indian Folk Dance Form to make it welcoming for new generations. Fundamental techniques are constant irrespective of language in both; Bharatnatyam And Indian Folk Dances. Indian Folk Dances Forms have shorter compositions and non-carnatic music in most or all cases than average Bharatnatyam or any classical dance and so it is easier to learn it without recomposing the work in regional language. Besides, it is easy to learn translations of whole song than to go bonkers over learning a language for just one time 3-4 minute of dance work. And for Indian Folk Dances, language changes drastically for each folk dance form with NO absolute resemblance of technique or anything.

Bollywood as we talk about is NO different when it comes to breaking the language standards. Bollywood got its name from Bombay Studios-thats in Mumbai. Mumbai is in Maharashtra-India. Mumbai has regional language of Marathi. Bollywood is NOT IN MARATHI :).

IMG_5972As the theater dramas advanced to movies & gained popularity, the Bombay Studios adopted National Language of India-Hindi to give honors to India and various talents from all over India were invited to be part of showing their talents and skills on the big screen. Sort of like a pre-recorded theater drama where in all the set-backs and mistakes of live performances were deleted!

It did not end there, Marathi theaters continued and several other regions of India (which are now states) had their own theaters that advanced to movies in their regional languages. So now we have different names for Tollywood-Telugu Indian Cinema as it is known, Kollywood and several smaller names that are barely used. But Bollywood and Tollywood gained its big name because of variety and entertainment level that it had to offer on such a broad spectrum, all over the world. From some of the most famous Classical Dancers, Indian folk dancers, Music, Cultures to pretty much any talent you can think of is all showcased. Therefore, even in Bollywood that has principle language as Hindi, it is not only Hindi but has flares of various accents of other languages depending on story!

From Aika Dajiba (marathi song but inspired from folk song), Neele Neele Ambar (in Hindi), Nagada Sang Dhol Baaje(Gujarati remix from folk song), famous songs of Rabindranath Tagore (mostly in bengoli), telugu remixes and tamil remixes, bhagra & Rajasthani examples(unlimited songs!) to any religion dances that you can think of. All of these hit the charts again and again with its several variations of song recomposed with several remixes and today we have Shape of you that is actually a Non-Indian Song & thats the part of several Bollywood remixes! Tollywood has main language as telugu but it has remix of English, Hindi, Urdu and lot of other languages and cultures showcased just as well.

Main goal & audiences of Bollywood/Tollywood/Indian Cinema Dances is only entertainment with some culture to be called as Indian at least in the entire movie of 2-3 hours. In Tollywood, it is usually showing off the South Indian flare & some other languages as dialogues or accents to be specific but that does not mean Bollywood is specifically for North Indians (LOL). And it does not mean in Tollywood, they don’t wear western clothes 🙂

That is why indian movie dances do not have dance form or specific style of its own.

There, we eliminated your need of sitting and learning ALL the languages for learning Indian Folk Dances, Bharatnatyam Or Bollywood/Tollywood/Indian Movie Dances.

One more less work to take care of. Isn’t life that simple ?

Recital 2018 – A Fusion Life of American Born Cultured Indian/Desi (ABCD)

fusionlife2018Recital 2018 concept and theme was decided in 2016 by Hetal Nagaraj.

The students in beginning of 2017 were actually taught dances like-wise throughout the year covering just the basics staying in their own category.

The whole idea got the shape in October 2017 when a rough playlist was made. A couple of these dances were also showcased in some of local talent competitions (September-October 2017), Diwali Mela(s)-(November 2017) at various places and other local festival stages. And a few of these had already won the awards too such as Pushpanjali, Madhurashtakam (Practice video-Selected for finals).

With all the influences of Non.Indian Culture in our Indian Dances, Dramas and thus our lives, we thought of showing how a life of our next generations that are brought up here. As it says, A=American, B=Born, C=Confused, D=Desis. But for our students of Grace And Grooves, C stands for CULTURED DESI, CLEAR FUNDAMENTALS, AND CRYSTAL CUT Diamond like TALENTS. Talents that can’t be beaten, Talents that can’t be judged with shallow mark-ups or untrained eyes and Talents that can’t be shadowed. 

Grace And Grooves is an Indian Dance School where students know difference between Bollywood And Indian Folk Dances, Bollywood And Bharatnatyam, Bharatnatyam and Indian Folk, Semi-Classical And Bharatnatyam too! 
So the recital program 2018 of Grace And Grooves had Pure Bharatnatyam that showcased the richness of Indian Classical Dances to Fun Indian Folk, Fusion Folk, Movie Types Semi-Classical Dances infused with & without Desi-HipHop to real semi-classical dances, Bollywood Modern-Contemporary Desi-HipHop Fusions and Folk And the dance dramas inspired from movies such as Bahubali, Veer Zaara & many more. 

Grace And Grooves successfully completed NAVARASA as per Natya Shashtra Guidelines in Bharatnatyam, Indian Folk Dances And Bollywood/Movie Dances in 2017-2018 year. All the dances are directed or choreographed exclusively by Hetal Nagaraj unless otherwise mentioned. Our Company Choreographers contributed with dances on Ramta Jogi by Mansi Chauhan and Ganesh Kavtuvam by Buvuneshwari Murugan.

We cannot forget Indian Movies that teaches us to dream big and live-happily ever after within our cultural boundaries—no matter where we go. Thus, our Special Feature of the evening & 90s Tribute was An Exclusive Tribute to Shahrukh Khan of Bollywood – SRK as we know him. It showcased non-stop 11 mins of SRK’s movie dances by around 20+ students and special appearances from Raghu K and Pavithra K. Videos will be shortly available.

Very first time in our recital, we had Guest Choreographers with Rang Barse-Holi Remix Tribute by Ritu Kharbanda and Bollywood Garba on Nagada Sang Dhol Baaje By Mishu Shashtri. Our Guest-Artist this time was a young artist – Arjun Iyer, Age 11 who played various notes starting from National Anthem of USA with music to notable Tamil Songs on Keyboard-Piano and Clarinet. Guest choreographer Ritu Kharbanda contributed with song of Om Shanti Om to our SRK non.stop dance extravaganza as her contribution to salute our King Khan with Harshita and Gargi.
